Steve
Puleo’s Dark Tide is a popular subject for
reading clubs, and Steve has made presentations to a number
of local groups. Steve enthusiastically supports book clubs
and is happy to meet with any that are reading and enjoying
his books. If your club is reading any of Steve's books, send a photo
and information about your club to Steve at stephen@stephenpuleo.com
(if you include Steve’s book in the photo — even
better!) We look forward to featuring more clubs on this site
soon.
Are Steve's books on your club's reading list? If so, we have created discussion questions for Dark Tide, Due To Enemy Action, and The Boston Italians to help lead your discussions. For more information about the books, be sure to review this website, including the Food For Thought section.
The Erudite Book Club of Provo, Utah, selected Dark Tide as its topic for May 2010. The club, which has been together for 25 years, chooses only nine books each year, “so it is very important that we select only the best books!” says club President Virginia Bryson. “We all enjoyed Dark Tide and felt you did a wonderful job describing the real-life characters,” she says. “We garnered a lot of information about the state of the United States during that time. The actual molasses flood was almost secondary to the insights we gained regarding terrorism, effects of the war, and socioeconomic conditions. It was a very exciting and educational discussion.” Club members, pictured above, enjoyed a Boston-themed meal, including Boston baked beans, cooked with molasses, and a tea party with molasses cookies dunked in beautiful china teacups.
Steve met with the book club from Donovan, Sullivan & Ryan,
a financial services firm based in Westwood, Massachusetts, to discuss
Dark Tide. The group toured the molasses flood site
in Boston's North End, and then enjoyed a delicious dinner
at L’Osteria restaurant. Members of the club presented
Steve with a bottle of wine and a molasses cookie recipe,
which he is happy to share here.
